Our Living Felt Fairies answer your most-asked questions about needle felting, wool, and supplies — all in one place.

Choosing the Best Fiber

For a bright white snowman, the very best needle felting wool is the Living Felt Bright White CX-2 Batting. It is the whitest wool for felting and perfect for making snowmen, plus it needle felts easily and firm.

You can apply this over our CW-1 Core Wool which is much loved for needle felting 3D shapes.

CW-1 Core Wool comes in a Roving or Batting, which ever you prefer for needle felting, it is the same product either in a long strip (roving) or in fluffy sheet (batting)

For a nice, dark red, our MC-1 Felting Wool in Vintage Red is an absolute favorite.

People love our MC-1 felts to a smooth finish when needle felting and wet felting.

CX-2 Winter White is our brightest, cleanest white felting woll and the best choice for snowmen and white accents. Maori Natural White is a lovely, creamy, natural white - less bright than CX-2, and not as off-white as CW-1 Core Wool. If you want snow white felting wool, choose CX-2; for a softer natural look, choose Maori. https://feltingsupplies.livingfelt.com/cx-2

Beginner Felting Projects

Use Short Fiber Merino Batts (19 micron) - they felt quickly and evenly for beginners. Plan about 0.25 oz per person (varies with bar size). Choose hard-milled, unscented or lightly scented soap so it lasts and is comfortable for everyone. Make one sample first so you feel prepared. https://feltingsupplies.livingfelt.com/Short-Fiber-Merino-Batts-19-microns_c_120.html

Animals & Fur

For long, realistic fur, use NZ Corriedale or Merino Top (19.5 micron), or blend both for body + shine. Our Wild & Tame Hair & Mane packs include popular fur shades that blend beautifully. Teaching Felting Classes

Divide our CW-1 Core Wool into 1oz or smaller bundles, one per person for bases, then set out 0.25 oz color bundles in shared baskets or bowls. Give a few students a small bowl to share for their colors, the amount depends on the project. Show them how to tear wool for easier blending and tidier tables. You might even give each person a small tray or bowl to hold the fibers they choose and help keep things neat and in control. End 5-10 minutes early and consider letting students take a sandwich bag or more of leftover bits to take home, and have them help gather up the rest plus tools as a group.
